The echo properties of an area can be acquired by recording loud bursts of sounds within the space. Using multiple digital microphones, produced sounds within the caves were recorded and then computationally analyzed for reverberation. The patterns were then processed and visualized as generative animation.
The sound of emptiness is something never experienced in an overly populated city. We live in sonic chaos. The caves remote location and cavernous structure have a unique quality of responding to sound. This isolation creates levels of sonic resonance that are impossible anywhere else. The animation contrasts the sounds of silence by giving visual form to the roar of overcrowded cityscapes. As a musician, while most people hear only melody, I also hear the surroundings as taking part in that melody.
