Spiders and insects were selected based on their camouflage and movement and then photographed. Using focus-stacking techniques for improved detail, the military/insect hybrids were created through digital painting and compositing.
The military presence during the Vietnam War still lingers in the country through photographs, museums, ad hoc displays and tourist items. It is as if the war is now part of the country’s DNA. In addition, the area around the caves is the former war zone and still harbors chemicals and landmines in the soil. Although these hybrid bugs are funny at first, they comment on how war becomes ingrained into the very nature and soul of a culture.
